"Victoria"(collection of ARTIZON MUSEUM), a marble sculpture by Christian Daniel RAUCH, a German artist active 19th century, is engraved with downy hair expressed by the strokes of a file on the polished skin of a goddess. Apparently, the goddess of victory in the world Rauch imagines has unwanted hair, and it is not removed at all.

This is a ridiculous realization. But for me, it was the most valuable realization of all.
I suddenly thought about what I would do if I were to fantasize about a goddess.
My goddess, I'm sure, would have no hair because she is a timeless being, or rather, she can control her amount of hair. After appreciating Rauch's works, the vision of my goddess, which I had only vaguely imagined before, because so real that I could conform whether she had hair or not.

I often think back to this realization when I create my works. The artist's selfish imagination can expand the world of a distant audience, even if this imagination is realized by the means of an artist's laughably modest endeaveor.

When I try to talk about the "Cast and Rot" series, I get confused about the garnish of a carrot (the word "pedestal" somehow seems inappropriate here).
If I were to reveal my selfish imagination here, based on the premise that Rauch and I are different artists, I would say that one day, when the carrots decay into dust, there will probably be a "mass" that cannot be called a work of art, but one that must have been created by a human being, standing there without emitting anything.

19世紀に活躍したドイツのアーティスト、クリスチャン・ダニエル・ラウホの制作した大理石の立体作品、勝利の女神（アーティゾン美術館蔵）には、磨き上げられた女神の肌にヤスリでひと撫で、そのストロークによって表現された産毛が刻まれている。どうやら彼の見ている世界の中の女神には産毛が生えていて、しかも全然処理していないらしい。

馬鹿げた気づきだ。しかし僕にとってはこれ以上ないくらい重要な気づきでもある。ふと自分が女神を空想するときはどうだろう、と考える。僕が女神を空想するとき、きっと彼女は時間を超越した存在だから産毛は生えていない。というか毛量は自由にコントロール出来たりする気がする。これまで朧げにしか想像できなかった僕の女神も、ラウホの作品を見た後ならば産毛の有無を確認できるほどに近寄ることができる。
僕は制作をするとき、しばしばこの気づきについて思い返す。作り手の身勝手な想像力が遠く離れた誰かの世界を広げることがあるのだと。それは大抵笑ってしまうほど控えめなかたちではあっても。

僕はCast and Rotシリーズについて語ろうとすると、ニンジンが据えられる添え物（ここではなんとなく台座という言葉は適さない気がした）に触れた途端えらく戸惑ってしまう。ラウホと自分はまるで別のアーティストであることを脇に置いて僕の身勝手な想像力をここで明かしてみるとしたら、いつの日かニンジンが朽ちて粉微塵となるとき、きっとそこには作品とも呼べない、しかし確かに人間がつくったであろう「塊」が何も発さずただただ佇んでいる。

Text- ヴィーナスの産毛、ニンジンと添え物

This series is inspired by my experience conserving and restoring modern and contemporary sculpture. As a simple experiment, I applied a conservation treatment for bronze sculpture to a "carrot." Usually, the conservation process for bronze sculptures consists of neutral detergent cleaning, complete drying, wax coating, and polishing as needed. When all these processes are conducted on carrots, somehow they extremely resistant to "rotting".

However, these is a such limitation and if no care is taken, after the second year or so, red mold can develop. With the presence of moisture, bugs can grow in an unfavorable environment. On the other hand, the bronze material, which I have been working with in the field of conservation and restoration, is recognized as a highly permanent material. Some people say that bronze can outlive humankind by more than 10 million years. Nevertheless, this is only the case when considered as a mere material. When observed as an "object of appreciation," bronze will probably decay if left for two years without any preservation treatment.

I sometimes view such "remaining" objects as bronze with the same sense of time as dried carrots. In this mood, I imagine that carrots are made by pouring plant life into earth, in some from of "casting."

Carrots are "cast"ed and then, they "rot." What is the meaning of the word "remain" here? I still don't know how to deal with this word, one I have used for as long as I can remember.

本シリーズは私が近現代彫刻の保存・修復に携わってきた経験から着想を得て、単なる実験としてニンジンに対しブロンズ彫刻に用いられる保存処置を施したことから始まる。一般にブロンズ彫刻に対する保存処置は中性洗浄剤で洗浄、完全乾燥、その後ワックスコーティング、適宜磨き上げ、という順序で行われる。それらの工程を全てニンジンに対して行うと、どういうわけかとても腐りづらいニンジンが出来上がる。

といってももちろん限界はあって、何も手入れしなければ2年目あたりからは湿気があると赤カビが発生するし、環境が悪いと虫が発生したりもする。一方で私が保存・修復に携わるなかで触れてきたブロンズという素材は人間が滅んでからも1千万年以上残るという人もいるほど恒久性の高い素材として認識されているらしい。しかしそれは単なる物質としてみたときの話であって、「鑑賞物」として見れば恐らく保存処置がなされない状態で2年くらい放ったらかしにすれば大抵、鑑賞の邪魔をするような腐食が多数現れる。

私はブロンズのような「残る」とされるものたちを、干物のニンジンと同じ程度の時間の感覚で見てしまうことがある。そんな気分の時は、そういえばニンジンも大地に植物の生を注ぎ込んで作られるのだからまるで鋳造みたいだ、だなんて連想まで始めてしまう。

鋳造（= cast）しては腐って（= rot）いく。「残る」という言葉が指し示すところはいったいなんなのだろうか。物心がついた頃にはもう使っていたはずの言葉との付き合いかたを、私は未だわからないままでいる。

Perfumed oil

This work uses fragrance. A uniquely formulated fragrant oil was applied to the walls. The ingredients in this fragrant oil were controlled to have a yellowish tint.

Fragrance is one of the fastest-disappearing elements among many forms of expression.
This work assumes that the yellowing, which will appear on the surface sometime after the fragrance has completely dissipated, is its trace, but it is only a substitute for the fragrance.
What does it mean to "remaining" a fragrance (which is everything, including the unintended)? This is, in fact, the problem of everything related to physical materials.

Ingredients　memo

Linseed oil
Vegetable dry oil extracted from flax seeds. It is widely used for oil paintings, and has excellent adherence and film strength. It has a yellowish tint. Its aroma is that of oil, but when mixed well with spicy scents, it mellows out the whole composition.

Frankincense
Frankincense is made from the resin extracted from trees of the Boswellia genus of the family Alangiaceae. Also known as frankincense. It has strong antibacterial properties. Known as the celebratory gift offered by the Three Doctors of the East to the feet of babies at the time of Christ's birth. Refreshing, slightly sweet aroma.

Myrrh
Myrrh is made from the resin extracted from trees of the genus Commiphora of the family Alangiaceae. Also known as "myrrh. Has bactericidal properties. Some people believe that myrrh is the origin of the word "mummy" because myrrh was soaked in flax cloth and used to embalm corpses in the past. One of the oldest perfumes.
It has a spicy, slightly bitter, and well-defined aroma.

Cedarwood
Cedarwood is made from chips cut from the trunks of Himalayan cedars. The wood was often used for furniture and building materials because of its insect repellent properties and fragrance.
The essential oil has a noticeable fragrance with a hint of vegetal greenness.

Patchouli
Patchouli is made from the fermented and dried leaves of the Perilla frutescens plant.
In addition to its use as a perfume because of its insect repellent effect, in 19th century England, dried patchouli leaves were used in wardrobes for storing linens.
It has a very strong lingering fragrance, similar to that of India ink.

Benzoin
Made from the resin extracted from the anthocyanin tree. Also known as "benzoin.
In Armenia at the end of the 19th century, there are records of people burning benzoin to disinfect their houses while giving them a pleasant aroma.
It has a spicy aroma with a vanilla-like nuance.

Gaillac Wood
Made from the resin and sawdust of a tree belonging to the family Pinaceae.
It has antioxidant properties. The tree was used as a remedy for syphilis and tuberculosis until the 1930s, as well as for arthritis.
It has a rose-like aroma with a subtle burnt smell.

Clove
Made from the flower buds of the butterfly bush. Also known as "Ding" or "Dingzhi" or "Hyakuriko".
It is known for its insecticide and deodorant properties. It is well known for its use as a spice, but in some regions, such as Indonesia, it is also used as a tobacco. In Japan, clove cigarettes are available under the brand name "garam".
It has a clean aroma like toothpaste or gargle.

香油
Parfumiste: Sumire Miyazaki

本作は香りを用いた作品である。独自に調合した香油を壁に塗布した。この香油に含まれる成分は、黄変性を持つよう調整されている。

香りは数ある表現の中でも最も早く消失するものの一つである。
本作は香りが完全に放散したのち、いつか表面に現れるであろう黄変をその痕跡と想定したが、それは香りの代替物でしかない。
香り（それは意図されなかったものも含めた全てである）を「残す」とはどういうことか。これは実のところフィジカルな素材に関連するあらゆるものが抱える問題である。

成分メモ

リンシードオイル
亜麻の種子から採った植物性の乾性油。油彩画に多用され、固着力塗膜強度に優れる。黄変性がある。香りはまさに油のそれだが、スパイシーな香りとうまく調合すると全体をまろやかにしてくれる。

フランキンセンス
カンラン科ボスウェリア属の樹木から採れる樹脂を原料とする。別名「乳香」。強力な抗菌作用をもつ。キリストの誕生時に東方の三博士が赤子の足元に捧げた祝いの贈り物として知られる。
爽やかで、ほのかに甘い香り。

ミルラ
カンラン科コンミフォラ属の樹木から採れる樹脂を原料とする。別名「没薬」。殺菌作用をもつ。亜麻布にミルラを浸し、遺体の防腐処理に用いられた過去があることから、「ミイラ」の語源という説もある。最も古い香料のひとつ。
スパイシーでかすかに苦味のある、輪郭のはっきりとした香りをもつ。

シダーウッド
ヒマラヤ杉の幹を切削したチップを原料とする。防虫効果をもち、香りも良いために木材はしばしば家具や建材としても用いられた。
まさに杉の香りといったところだが、精油はほのかに植物の青臭さを含んだ、目立つ香りである。

パチュリ
シソ科ミズトラノオ属の葉を発酵・乾燥させたものを原料とする。
防虫効果をもつため香料としての利用に加え、19世紀のイギリスではリネン類を保管するタンスに乾燥させたパチュリの葉を入れるなどの利用法もあった。
非常に残香性がよく、墨汁に似た強い香りを放つ。

ベンゾイン
アンソクコウノキから採れる樹脂を原料とする。別名「安息香」。
呼吸器感染症の治療薬として用いられた。19世紀末、アルメニアでは住民たちがベンゾインを焚いて家屋に良い香りをあたえながら消毒していたという記録が残っている。
スパイシーだが、バニラのようなニュアンスももった香り。

ガイヤックウッド
ハマビシ科ユソウボク属の樹木の樹脂とおがくずを原料とする。
抗酸化作用をもつ。樹木は1930年代まで梅毒と結核症の治療薬として用いられたほか、関節炎の治療薬としても役立てられた。
バラのような香りに加え、ほのかに焦げ臭さも感じられる。

クローブ
チョウジノキから採れる花蕾を原料とする。別名「丁字/丁子」あるいは「百里香」。
防虫・消臭効果をもつ。香辛料としての使用が有名だが、インドネシアなど一部地域ではタバコとしても使用されてる。日本でも「ガラム」という銘柄でクローブが用いられたタバコを手に入れることができる。
歯磨き粉やうがい薬のような、清潔感のある香り。

I made a cylindrical sculpture inspired by the Mesopotamian Cylinder Seals. This video is an archive of rolling the cylindrical sculpture on the ground. This sculpture is engraved with a human-shaped casted form of my body.

This work is a self-portrait. My Korean mother and I as a Japanese sang KIMIGAYO(Japanese national anthem). KIMIGAYO is a song with no prelude. Therefore, when we sang together, I valued the harmony between us rather than the sense of belonging to Japan.

「夜鳴くイヌは腹が減って鳴く」によせて

このとき私は、訳あって自画像をつくらなければなりませんでした。
私は自画像とは一人の人間が何らかの手法、形式を用いて自らをうつしとることだと思っています。多くの場合これは肖像画という形式、つまりなんらかの描画材を用いてその人の外観を描き出すことによって表現されます。しかしそれこそが自画像であるという考えには素直に頷けないところがありました。自己をうつしとる方法は鏡や写真をみて造形を追うことだけではないはずです。私は可能な限り、それ以外の方法でアプローチしてみようと考えました。　

思いついたのは母と合唱することでした。私は何から生まれ、何として生きてきたのかを端的に表せるからです。動物の鳴き声はしばしば同種であることを確認するために用いられます。人間も当然、人間だからこそ歌う瞬間があるはずです。

合唱をするということは、お互いが知っている歌でなくてはなりません。母とほとんど会話をしない私が、なんの疑いもなくお互いが知っていると確信できた歌は君が代だけでした。「私たちが育ってきた国」の国歌です。人生で何度も歌ってきました。しかし、ここで新たな問題が出てきました。これは「私たち」の国歌なのかという問題です。母の国籍は韓国で、日本人であるはずの私もなぜかこの歌に負い目を感じていました。

そして私は、この君が代に対する微妙な感情と似たものを母にも向けていた事に気付きました。
自らが引いた線を、歌うことをもって踏み越えること。不確かなアイデンティティにたんなる人間として振舞うことで勝利すること。いつしかそれが目的になりました。

歌い終えて、結果がどうなったのか私にはまだわかりません。母の祖先が生きた済州島の民謡、ノヨンナヨンなかに「夜鳴く鳥はあなたが恋しくて鳴く」という一節があります。結局、私たちはあの夜なにに向けて君が代を歌ったのでしょうか。少なくとも、吠えかける犬の声が別のものに向けられていたことしか私にはわかりませんでした。

This is the performance of marbling black ink into white water on the floor. Under the assumption that space defines the work, this was an attempt to visually reproduce a completely horizontal marble floor using the marbling technique. Then, I added my body into a work through my performance.
